Geoffrey Allstop (Allsop)
Born in Eastwood, Rotherham in 1905, his family emigrated to the United States when he was a small child. He arrived in Spain in September 1937 and joined the Mac-Paps. He led a patrol of 7 men in Caspe on 01/03/1938, the patrol never returned, and he was listed as missing in action, his death certificate being issued in 04/08/1938. His body remains on Spanish soil.
Tommy James
Born in Rotherham Workhouse in 1898, he was a miner at Rotherham Main Colliery. He arrived in Spain in January 1937 and fought in the battle of Jarama. He departed from Spain in September 1937. Tommy James died in Rotherham in 1971.
Joe Maiden
Born in 1918, Joe was a Precision Grinder, a member of the AEU and a member of the Clarion Cycling Club. He arrived in Spain on 07/02/1938 and was taken prisoner following the retreat through Aragon. He was incarcerated in various prisons, including the San Pedro de Cardena Concentration Camp, and was repatriated following a prisoner exchange in October 1938. Joe died in Solihull in 1989.
Chris Smith
Born in Coatbridge, Scotland in 1915, Chris spent a large portion of his life in Rotherham. He was a Dispatch Clerk who arrived in Spain on 10/05/1937. A member of the British Anti-Tank Battery, Chris saw action at Brunete; Aragon Offensive; Teruel and Aragon (Retreats). Wounded in the abdomen at Quinto on 24/08/1937, he recovered at Mataro Hospital. Following the Anti-Tank Battery being disbanded in April 1938, he joined the British Battalion Machine Gun Unit during the Ebro offensive. Chris was repatriated in October 1938 and died in Rotherham in 2000.
Rotherham Friends of The International Brigade is open to all who share our basic aims. We are particularly pleased that our group includes relatives of those that joined the International Brigade. Many of our members are Trade Unionists and we work closely with Rotherham TUC.
